Each of the 96 players in this inaugural U.S. Adaptive Open has traveled an incredible journey, with many obstacles overcome to reach this championship on Course No. 6 at the Pinehurst Resort. Among the most amazing is that of Alex Fourie, whose path to becoming an accomplished golfer began in an orphanage in Ukraine.
Alex Fourie weighed 34 ½ pounds when he came to America at the age of 7.
"The only thing we really ate was soup," said Fourie, "and it's really hard to eat soup with a hole in your mouth."
Alex Fourie was adopted from a Ukrainian orphanage at the age of 7 and now this orphanage still contains 175 children in the thick of a war with Russia.
Alex Fourie is now a 27-year-old man with a child living in Tennessee, which is a different world compared to what his life could've been like.
